2.1.2.2 ELABORATION AND DISCUSSION

Heat

Heat problems are due to the bulb filament being to close to the outer lens, causing warpage and brittleness of the lens. As with venting, problems may be detected only after manufacture and assembly of the product.

Heat problems rank high in terms of total and average solution time, and second in terms of average cost.

Some preliminary computational investigation is possible at the advisor level to detect assembly conditions which may eventually lead to heat related problems. These would rely on the geometries of the parts as an assembly, with a measurement of the distance between the bulb and outer lens, and a application of a heuristic judging whether this distance is enough.
